La tarde cae en San Francisco, USA, desde el City View del Yerba Buena Gardens,  se ve el cielo teñirse de rojo y las luces de la ciudad se van encendiendo.

Unas 1000 mujeres protagonistas, referentes, líderes de todo el mundo se reúnen para cenar, escuchar la hermosa voz de Tanya Tawenga (cantante y compositora zimbabuense), compartir el testimonio de artesanos y recorrer la muestra-mercado de artesanías de todo el mundo.

Las mujeres son participantes del TEDxWomen 2016 y Manos del Uruguay es una de las  12 organizaciones de artesanas invitadas a exponer.

The sun fades in San Francisco, USA. At the City View of the Yerba Buena Gardens, the sky is turning red and the lights of the city are starting to appear.

Around 1000 women, leaders, influencers from around the world gather for dinner, listen to the beautiful voice of Tanya Tawenga (Zimbabwean singer and songwriter), share the testimony of artisans and tour the showcase of handicrafts from around the world.

The women are participants of TEDxWomen 2016 and Manos del Uruguay is one of the 12 organizations of artisans invited to exhibit.

TED es una organización sin fines de lucro que busca comunicar ideas, a través de charlas cortas y potentes.  Los TEDxWomen convocan a diferentes mujeres que están siendo protagonistas en temas de género, ciencia, educación o cultura.  En esta ocasión el tema fue: It’s about time (ya es tiempo).

En esta edición la organización del TED unió fuerzas con la Alliance for the Artisan Enterprise, del Aspen Institute, para incluir en la agenda de las charlas el tema de la artesanía y su rol fundamental como herramienta para el desarrollo y el empoderamiento de las mujeres. Para esto se organizó un showcase (muestra )   bajo el lema IT’s about time to #chooseartisan (ya es tiempo de elegir artesanal).   Manos del Uruguay, que es miembro de la Alliance for Artisan Enterprise  fue seleccionada entre más de 120 organizaciones.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. The TEDxWomen gathers different women who are leading in subjects of gender, science, education or culture. In this edition the theme was: It’s about time.

The TED organization joined forces with the Aspen Institute’s  Alliance for the Artisan Enterprise to include in the agenda the issue of artisan work  as a key tool for the development and empowerment of women. The showcase was organized under this idea:  IT’s about time to #chooseartisan.  Manos del Uruguay, which is a member of the Alliance for Artisan Enterprise,  was selected among more than 120 organizations.

Las charlas tuvieron lugar en el Yerba Buena Center for the Arts y el Artisan Showcase tuvo dos locaciones; el City View donde se montaron stands con forma de teepees (carpas de los indios nativos americanos) en la terraza  y el  Westfiled Center donde la muestra se montó bajo techo.

The talks were held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Artisan Showcase had two locations; The City View, where teepees  were set up on the terrace and the Westfiled Center.

Se trató de una excelente oportunidad para mostrar nuestros productos y  contar nuestra historia. Las asistentes al TED se enamoraron de la suavidad de nuestras ruanas y chales  de merino, mientras aprendían sobre nuestra organización, las artesanas uruguayas y nuestro trabajo. Esperamos que estos valiosos contactos rindan sus frutos en el futuro.

El encuentro fue también una forma de tender lazos con otras organizaciones, fue increíblemente emocionante e inspirador conocer a las representantes de cada organización, conocer sus historias y las  realidades  de cada comunidad y pensar en buscar nuevas oportunidades en conjunto.

It was an excellent opportunity to show our products and tell our story. The TED attendees fell in love with the softness of our merino wraps and shawls, while learning about our organization, the Uruguayan artisans and our work.
The meeting was also a way to build relationships with other organizations, it was incredibly exciting and inspiring to meet the representatives of each organization, to learn their stories and the realities of each community and to think about looking for new opportunities together.

La Iniciativa  Yawanawa,  apoya a esta tribu de la amazonia brasilera a buscar su equilibrio con la selva y el medio ambiente protegiendo sus costumbres ancestrales.

The Yawanawa Initiative, helps this tribe of the Brazilian Amazon to seek its balance with the jungle and the environment while protecting its ancestral skills.

La escuela de artes Turquoise Mountain en Kabul, Afganistan busca restaurar las formas artísticas tradicionales, formando a hombres y mujeres.

El Colectivo Maisha,  donde muchachas refugiadas africanas producen chalinas teñidas a mano en Nairobi, Kenia.

Tria Etc, es una empresa griega que trabaja con artesanos locales realizando objetos tradicionales repensados para lograr un producto contemporáneo.
