Esta es una nueva sección dentro del blog en la que compartimos con ustedes el trabajo de artesanos y artistas relacionados con Manos.

El arte textil -y el telar en particular- están experimentando un renacimiento que nos pone muy contentos.  Conocimos el trabajo de Hello Tangle a través de Instagram e inmediatamente nos convertimos en fans. Con un impecable gusto para la combinación de colores y talento para la creación de volumen y textura, este dúo australiano es un gran exponente de una nueva ola de artistas textiles.

Bibi (36) y Verónica (34) son hermanas y crecieron en Flinders, cerca de Melbourne, donde ahora viven. Ambas tienen estudios en arte  y dividen su tiempo entre trabajos part-time y su espacio creativo Hello Tangle.

We first learned about Hello Tangle trough Instagram and immediately fell in love with their work, where they feature Manos yarns. 

Bibi (36) and veronica (34) are sisters and grew up in Flinders, near Melbourne, where they now live.  They both have Arts Studies backgrounds and  divide their time between their part-time jobs and their creativity outlet: Hello Tangle.  

We contacted Bibi and Veronica to learn about their  work.

Como nació Hello Tangle?

Empezamos a probar con el telado un par de años atrás, primero creando los bastidores con marcos de cuadros, cartón, madera vieja y cualquier cosa que pudiéramos encontrar.

Comenzamos  simplemente jugando con las fibras, encontrando las técnicas online y aprendiendo por nuestra cuenta. Creamos cosas para nosotras y nuestra familia por diversión, hasta que tomamos un curso de telar, donde recibimos bastidores y allí es cuando todo realmente despegó. Continuamos trabajando con lo aprendido en clase junto a lo que lo que ya hacíamos y abrimos una cuenta en instagram. Fué en ese punto, cuando Bibi había terminado sus estudios y trabajaba part –time y Verónica estaba con licencia maternal, que pensamos que ya era hora de empezar a vender nuestros telares.

How was Hello Tangle born?

We began dabbling in weaving a couple of years ago by at first creating our own looms out of picture frames, cardboard, old wood, whatever we could find that would work really.  We began by just playing around with the fibres, finding techniques online, and just trying to figure stitches out ourselves.  After just creating things for ourselves and our family for fun, we took an afternoon course in weaving, where we were supplied with lap looms, and that’s where things really took off.  We started off just continuing to practice what we had learned at the class, along with the techniques we had found online or just figured out ourselves, and eventually started up an instagram account.  It was at this point that Bibi had finished studying, and was still working part-time, and Veronica was on maternity leave, planning on going back to work part-time, so we thought it was a good a time as any to make our work available for sale.

Que diferentes actividades  componen Hello Tangle?

Nos concentramos en crear tapices telados a manos pero también usamos nuestra página web e Instagram para mostrar parte de las ilustraciones de Bibi.

What different activities does Hello Tangle involve?

We mainly focus on creating hand woven wall hangings, but also use our web page and instagram account to show case some of Bibi’s illustration work.

De donde sacan su inspiración/ como es su proceso de trabajo?

Nuestra inspiración viene de todas partes. Muchas veces vemos combinaciones de color en la ropa que usamos, el arte que vemos o en las cosas sencillas como las flores del jardín o un cartel de publicidad! Generalmente partimos de una combinación de color para una pieza pero luego el desarrollo se va dando naturalmente. Tendemos a no diseñar las piezas con anterioridad, simplemente nos lanzamos y vemos a donde nos lleva. Podemos tener una idea en mente de del resultado final, pero en general el resultado es bastante diferente! Disfrutamos la libertad de dejar nuestra creatividad llevarnos a donde quiera, en vez de intentar seguir un diseño.

Where do you source your inspiration/ how is your work process?

Our inspiration comes from all over the place.  We often see colour combinations in the clothing we wear, in artwork we see, or even just the simple things like flowers in the garden or an advertising billboard!  We generally start off with a colour combination in mind for a piece, but from there things really just progress naturally.  We tend not to design our pieces in advance, but just get started and see where it takes us.  Often we might have a vision in our mind of how it will turn out, but the finished product is usually quite different to this!  We really enjoy that freedom of letting our creativity take us where it wants to go, rather than trying to conform to a design.

Que es lo que disfrutan mas de trabajar con lana?

La lana es realmente algo que hemos aprendido a apreciar. Nuestra madre es una gran tejedora, así que crecimos con hermosas prendas y accesorios tejidos a mano. Fue muy natural para nosotros continuar la tradición de trabajar con nuestras manos para crear cosas hermosas. Empezamos trabajando con el viejo stock de lanas de mamá y rápidamente empezamos a explorar los diferentes tipos de hilados que podíamos encontrar, así es como nos encontramos con Manos del Uruguay.

What do you enjoy most about working with wool?

Wool is something we have grown up with loving.  Our mother is an avid knitter, so we have grown up with beautiful hand knitted clothing and accessories.  It seemed so natural for us to continue the tradition of working with our hands and creating beautiful things we love.  We began working with a lot of our Mum’s old wool stash, but quickly started exploring the many different types of yarn that we could find, which is when we came across Manos Del Uruguay.

Cual es la relevancia de los materiales éticos en su trabajo?

Saber que los animales, personas y el ambiente son respetados y cuidados para la creación de nuestros  materiales , hace nuestros tapices más especiales.

Con Manos, el hecho de saber el nombre de la talentosa señora que creó la lana que estamos usando (gracias a la información en cada tarjeta) es un recordatorio de la situación de otras personas y de que al comprar sus productos podemos ayudar, aunque sea una contribución pequeña. También nos gusta reusar y reciclar fibras que compramos en tiendas de oportunidad, etiquetas, asas de bolsas de papel y otras cosas que si no terminarían en la basura.

What is the relevance of ethical materials in your work?

Knowing that people, animals and the environment are respected and cared for in the creation of materials we use makes our weavings more special.  With Manos wool, even just the fact that we know the name of each talented lady who helped create the wool we’re using, thanks to the information on each tag, is a reminder of other people’s situations and that by us purchasing their products we can help in some way even if it is only a small contribution.  We also like to repurpose and recycle fibre from Op Shops, clothing tags, paper bag handles and other places that would otherwise be thrown out and go to landfill.

Que hilados de Manos usan en su trabajo y porqué? Y cual es su color favorito?

Los principales hilados que usamos en nuestro trabajo son Lana Clasica y Maxima. Conocimos los productos en Morris and Sons, una tienda en el centro de Melbourne. La hermosa exhibición y selección de colores fue lo que primero nos atrajo, pero cuando leímos sobre la misión de la compañía supimos que este era el tipo de producto que queríamos usar en nuestro trabajo.  Adoramos los colores y la forma que varía el tono en una madeja, por la forma artesanal que está teñido. También nos encanta la textura del Clasica con sus variaciones de grosor. El primer color que compramos sigue siendo nuestro favorito: Lana Clasica en Cameo. Por alguna razón las dos estamos siempre atraídas al rosado, y nos resulta tan difícil resistirnos que lo usamos mucho en nuestro trabajo, lo cual es raro ya que ninguna de somos muy fans del rosado en general!

What Manos products do you use in your work and why? What’s your favourite Manos colour?

The main Manos products we use in our work are the Wool Clasica and the Maxima.  We first came across these products in Morris and Sons, a wool shop in the centre of Melbourne.  The beautiful display and the array of colours was what first attracted us to it, but when we actually read about the aim of the company we knew this was the type of product we wanted to use in our work.

We absolutely love the colours, and the way the gradient of the colour changes throughout one skein, presumably because of the way it’s all kettle dyed.  We also love the texture in particular of the Wool Classica, and the way it changes in thickness with a kind of slub-like effect.  The first colour we got would have to be our favourite, the Wool Classica in Cameo.  For some reason both  of us are always drawn to pink, and find it so hard to resist using it in so much of our work, which is strange given that neither of us are big fans of the colour pink in general!Bibi y Verónica en su taller, con el pequeño Freddie.
