El primer tema de inspiración de nuestro llamado a diseñadores es: Tango.

Tango is one of the most iconic and beloved musics of the Río de la Plata. It was born in the port cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires by the end of the XIX century, product of the  mix of the African, Creole and European heritages.

At the beginning it was considered a bad influence, a cabaret music and it wasn’t played in the high society ballrooms, but later in it conquered our popular culture, and the world.

El tango es la música más icónica del Río de la Plata. 

Nació en las ciudades portuarias de Montevideo y Buenos Aires a fines del siglo XIX, producto de la mezcla de las culturas africana, criolla y europeas.

Al principio era considerado una mala influencia, una música de prostíbulos y no se escuchaba en los bailes de alta sociedad, pero luego conquistó el mundo.

It’s rhythm (the 2×4) and the particular, very strong and sexy dance has captured the imagination of the audiences for decades.

 

Es el baile sensual por excelencia, con la fuerza de su ritmo (el 2×4) el entrelazado de la pareja y los cortes y quebradas.

Currently there are some very interesting projects that fuse tango and electronics, like Bajofondo.

The tango-song is a bit less well known in internationally but hugely popular in our countries. The lyrics are usually quite evocative, sad, very dramatic and often have a strong dark humor. They are written in Lunfardo, a local slang that takes words from the many different nationalities that an immense immigration wave brought in the early XX century.

El tango-canción es un poco menos conocido en el mundo,  pero inmensamente popular en nuestros países. Las letras son evocativas, nostálgicas y dramáticas y muchas veces cargadas de humor negro. Están escritas en Lunfardo, el dialecto local que toma palabras de las lenguas de los inmigrantes que llegaron en gran número a principios del siglo XX.

The biggest tango singer of all times is Carlos Gardel, called “el Mago” (the magician) and  “el Zorzal Criollo” (the creole thrush), worshiped to this day for his voice and unmistakable style. Gardel’s way was sophisticated and glamorous and he even performed in many Hollywood movies.

El mas grande cantor de tango es Carlos Gardel, “el mago” o “el zorzal criollo”, adorado hasta nuestros días por su voz y su atractivo. Su forma de cantar el tango es sofisticada y melodiosa.

 

There’s another style in tango called «arrabalero» meaning that it comes from the arrabal, the low parts of the city. This style is less harmonious, more rough and strong.

Altough Tango’s lyrics are quite “machistas”, there’s a number of great female performers. I recommend that you get to know contemporary singers Francis Andreu, Adriana Varela or Malena Muyala.

Otros cantantes explotaron otro estilo de canto, “arrabalero” (del bajo),  más rudo y fuerte, un poco hablado.  

Aunque las letras de tango son bastante machistas, hay muchas intérpretes femeninas muy interesantes, les recomendamos conocer a Francis Andreu, Malena Muyala o Adriana Varela.
