La cooperativa COTAM, en Tacuarembó- COTAM cooperative

Marysol Custodio  -Mary como la conocen todos en Tacuarembó- trabaja en la cooperativa Cotam hace 17 años.

Mary es tejedora y trabaja en una de las maquinas familiares en las que se tejen las coloridas intarsias siempre presentes en las colecciones de Manos. En ésta técnica se utilizan diferentes ovillitos de lanas de colores y cada uno va “dibujando” el diseño. Cada sector de color tiene una colita de hilo al comienzo y al final y luego de tejer Mary las otras tejedoras, dedican horas a esconder prolijamente todas las colitas.

Marysol Custodio -Mary as everybody knows her- has been part of Cotam cooperative in Tacuarembó for 17 years. 

She is a knitter and works in one of the  hand loom machines where the colorful intarsias so popular in Manos collections are knitted.  In this technique many different yarn balls are used to «draw» a pattern. Every color area in the pattern has a starting and ending thread that needs to be hidden after knitted, it is a time consuming task. 

 

Además Mary es encargada de producción, recibe los pedidos, las fichas técnicas y la materia prima que se le envía desde Montevideo y organiza la producción, distribuyendo el trabajo de sus compañeras.

Mary trabaja con Eloína, la gerente de producción de Manos, para definir los tiempos de entrega, hacer consultas y organizar la logística.

Mary está orgullosa de su trabajo porque “Manos es una gran empresa nacional, donde se le da trabajo a muchas mujeres del interior del país”.

Mary is also the person in charge of production in the cooperative. She receives the production orders, technical charts and materials sent from Montevideo’s central. She organizes the work among her coworkers. Mary works with Eloína (Manos Production Manager) on the production schedule and logistics. 

She is very proud of her work, «Manos is a great organization that provides jobs to lots of  rural women».

Mary entra a trabajar a las 7 de la mañana hasta las 16, cuando se va a su casa a hacer las tareas del hogar y comer junto a su esposo e hijo adolescente, que está cursando el secundario.

En la cooperativa se vive un ambiente tranquilo y de compañerismo, Mary y las otras artesanas disfrutan de escuchar la radio y comentar las distintas noticias, tanto nacionales como de la ciudad, mientras trabajan.

Mary begins her working day at 7 AM, and returns home at 4PM, to her husband and son, who is currently studiyng at high school. 

While Mary and the other artisans work, they enjoy listening to the radio and discuss the local and national news.

Tacuarembó es la capital del departamento del mismo nombre y se ubica en el norte del Uruguay.  La ciudad, que toma su nombre del río cercano Tacuarembó Chico, tiene una población de 50.000 habitantes.

La producción de la zona es mayoritariamente ganadera y productora de soja y otros granos. También hay producción forestal y maderera.

La zona tiene un paisaje muy lindo de cerros y lagos y cuenta con varios puntos turísticos de interés, como el Valle Edén o el balneario Iporá.

Fundada en 1976, hace 40 años, la cooperativa de Manos del Uruguay, COTAM está compuesta por el grupo de Tacuarembó más otro en la cercana Tambores.

Tacuarembó is the capital city of the department of Tacuarembó, at the north of Uruguay. The city takes it name from the nearby river: Tacuarembó Chico (small) and it has a population of 50.000. The production of the area is manly cattle breading,  soy and other crops and forestry.   The area landscape is very nice, with lakes and hills and there’s a number touristic sites to visit, like Valle Edén and Balneario Iporá. 

Founded in 1976, Manos del Uruguay’s cooperative COTAM involves this group and another one  in nearby Tambores.
