For this fall Collection we collaborated with Paula Pereira, a brazilian handknit designer, that has us delighted with her charming design and her sweet and warm ways. We have a special connection with Paula, not just because she is a fellow latinamerican designer which we always celebrate, but also because of how she connects with Manos social aim and the artisans that dye our yarns.

Paula is a knitwear designer and teacher who believes that inspiration comes from people and nature. She loves to work with yarn and needles as tools to transform daily life inspirations into garments and accessories. She lives in Sao Paulo with her husband, two dogs and tons of beautiful fibers.

Este invierno trabajamos junto a Paula Pereira , una diseñadora brasilera que nos ha conquistado con sus adorables diseños y su dulzura y calidez.

Tenemos una conexión especial con Paula, un poco por su origen brasilero, que nos encanta! y también por su interés en nuestro proyecto social y el valor de las artesanas.

Paula es diseñadora y profesora de tejido y vive en Sao Paulo con su marido, dos perros y mucho hilado. Su fuente de inspiración son las personas y la naturaleza. Adora trabajar con la lana, las agujas para transformar las pequeñas inspiraciones diarias en prendas y accesorios.

– What caught you about the knitting world and how did you become a knitting designer?

At that point in my life, I was burned out of working on many decades in a very competitive industry. I need the money and I couldn’t stop, so my body took the decision for me, I got ill and had to stop.

I decided to pursue a career as a yoga instructor but on my way to the teacher training, there was the beautiful Urban Yarns store (I was living in Vancouver, BC at this time). So I became more and more passionate about the creation of hand knits.

I used all my resources to deepen my studies in shaping, grading, and fitting. My dream was to offer great patterns that can make people happy and enjoying their knitting time!

And it’s fundamental to say this was only possible because of the creators of Ravelry, Jessica, and Cassidy.

Que te llevó a ser diseñadora de tejido de punto?

En ese punto en mi vida, estaba agotada de trabajar por varias décadas en una industria muy competitiva, pero no podía parar porque necesitaba el dinero, así que mi cuerpo tomó la decisión por mi, me enfermé y tuve que parar.

Decidí convertirme en instructora de yoga, pero el tejido se interpuso, la hermosa tienda de hilados Urban Yarns estaba de camino a la academia (en esa época vivía en Vancouver, Canada). Así que me fui enamorando de la creación de tejidos.

Invertí todos mis recursos en clases para profundizar mis conocimientos de modelaje y escalado. Mi sueño era diseñar prendas que hicieran felices a las personas y disfrutaran de tejerlas.

Para mi es fundamental decir que esto ha sido posible gracias a Jessica y Cassidy, los creadores de Ravelry.

– Do you remember what was the first thing you knit or designed with Manos del Uruguay ? With which of our yarns?

Yes, absolutely! My first design with Manos yarns was for PomPom magazine, the Orianna sweater! A stranded colorwork sweater with cables at the body and sleeves, knitted with Manos Classica yarn!

Recordás cual fue la primera vez que tejiste o diseñaste con Manos?

Sí! Absolutamente! Mi primer diseño fue para PomPom Magazine, el sweater Orianna! Un sweater con trenzas en el cuerpo y mangas, y un jacquard de colores, tejido con Lana Clásica.

Me acuerdo perfectamente mi entusiasmo de trabajar junto al genial equipo creativo de PomPom, eligiendo los colores para el sweater. Meghan y Lidia llevan todo a otro nivel!

We are so in love with your new Yésica collection, so we would like to know more about it.

-What was the inspiration?

When I was invited for the Fall 2019 collection, I stayed in a state of grace, over the moon for a few days! I had two things in mind since the beginning: a mix match collection (where the pieces can be worn together) and to work with as much Manos yarns as possible, to showcase the variety, honoring the cooperative workers.

Estamos enamorados de la colección Yésica! Contanos cual fué tu inspiración.

Cuando fui invitada a diseñar la colección Invierno 2019 quedé súper emocionada! Tenía dos objetivos en mente desde el principio, hacer una colección donde todo combinara con todo y usar la mayor variedad de hilados de Manos posible para mostrar y honrar el trabajo de las artesanas.

– What was the design you liked the most? And the hardest one to develop ? why?

Hummm this is a hard one! I have a crush on The Vest, The Hat, and The Coat, because of the interesting and fun construction details. My goal was working with bulky yarns out of the comfort zone of traditional constructions, to enhance their weight, ply and colors characteristics to the max! I know I’m biased but I love the results!

Cual es tu diseño favorito? Y el más difícil de crear?

Mmmm que difícil! Me encantan el chaleco, el gorro y el tapado, porque tienen detalles interesantes y divertidos de construcción. Me interesaba trabajar con hilados gruesos, fuera de la zona de confort de las construcciones tradicionales, para resaltar sus características y colores. Modestia aparte, estoy muy feliz con los resultados!

The Cowl was created in a different way than I’m used to. Usually, I write the whole pattern, then I knit making small changes. With The Cowl, I was really into the upper body curves and shapes, to create a piece that can be dressed in many ways. So I drafted just a structure and wrote as I knitted.

El cuello Yésica lo trabajé de una forma distinta a lo que estoy acostumbrada. Normalmente escribo todo el patrón y luego lo tejo haciendo algunos cambios y ajustes. Con este cuello quería resaltar las curvas y formas del cuerpo, para crear una pieza que se pudiera usar de muchas formas. Así que hice un borrador de la estructura y lo escribí mientras lo tejía.

The Wrap was my most relaxing piece to create and knit. For me, it’s a feast, a party with multiple combinations of Fino and Cabrito in basic knitting stitches, knitted in different yarn combinations and sequences. And the construction is sooo fun! We start knitting from the center out, creating a seamless and reversible wrap.

El chal fue la prenda mas relajante de crear y tejer. Para mí es una fiesta, una celebración de múltiples combinaciones de Fino y Cabrito en puntos básicos, tejiendo en diferentes combinaciones y secuencias.

And finally the tops: I must say that I love them all! The Peasant Blouse is a piece that I will wear all year long and I think Fino yarn was the perfect match! The drape that we have because of the yarn weight and the blend is everything on this piece. I have a crush on a boho style and I can see myself wearing this blouse all the time! I’m pretty happy with the construction because it was possible to replicate the pleats from woven peasant blouses, in a very simple way!

Y los sweaters, los amo a todos! La Blusa Campesina (Peasant Blouse) es una pieza que voy a usar todo el año y la elección del hilado Fino fué perfecta. El grosor del hilado y la composición (seda y merino) le dan una caída que es todo en este diseño. Amo el estilo Boho y me veo usando esta prenda en toda ocasión. Estoy muy feliz con la construcción porque logré replicar las pinzas de las blusas tradicionales con una técnica simple de tejido.

The Lightweight Pullover was created with two things in mind: the «petite boxy» style that I love so much and think that looks awesome in any bodies shapes and to showcase the Milo yarn! The blend (merino/linen) and the texture of Milo is so unique! The petite boxy with rounded yoke mimic vertical pleats and dramatic sleeves are the design elements I used to show off Milo.

El sweater liviano ( Lightweight Pullover ) lo cree con dos ideas en mente, la silueta «petite boxy» (amplia) que me encanta porque le queda bien a todos los cuerpos, y resaltar el hilado Milo. La composición (merino/lino) y la textura del Milo son tan únicas! El sweater es muy cómodo, con un canesú redondo que imita pinzas verticales, y mangas amplias y dramáticas.

The Fairisle Pullover, also a petite boxy style top, was created for the Silk Blend yarn. The stranded colorwork motif is delicate and the color choice loked to create a visual effect of depth to the motif.

El Fairisle Pullover también amplio y cómdo, fué creado en Silk Blend. El motivo del canesú es un jaquard delicado y al elegir los colores busqué lograr un efecto de profundidad. – 

Can you suggest a design of Yésica collection to a beginner and also to an advanced knitter? Any advice in each case?

For beginers, I suggest The Hat, The Vest, The Coat, The Lightweight Sweater. For an intermediary knitter, The Cowl, The Wrap, The Fairisle, and The Peasant Blouse! My humble advice is: «go for what you love!» Today we have so many resources (especially online) to learn new techniques and make anything we are up to! I have a few videos on my Youtube Channel. I need to improve, they are home videos, but if you guys like to take a look, I will be happy to have you!

Que patrón recomendás para un principiante y para un tejedor avanzado?

Para principiantes sugiero el gorro, el chaleco, el tapado y el sweater Lightweight. Para un tejedor más avanzado el cuello, el chal, el sweater Fairisle y la blusa campesina. Un consejo, tirate al agua! Hoy tenemos tantos recursos (especialmente online) para aprender técnicas de tejido y hacer lo que mas te guste. – Do you have new projects?

Yes! I’ll have the joy and honor of having Fall/Winter designs at Making Forest issue, the Hytte Pullover. The whole issue is amazing and gorgeously curated – as always!). Also at Amirisu 19 issue the Patina Coat, Amirisu has done it again! Another issue that is a work of art, full of exquisite designs and aesthetics! It’s a treat for us!

I have also just launched a collaboration my dear friends Debbie Bresler from Murky Depths Dyes and Heather Love from Hello Mello.

Tengo la alegría y honor de tener diseños en el numero de invierno de la revista Making, Forest Issue, el sweater Hytte. La revista es genial y tan hermosamente curada como siempre! También en Amirisu 19 está mi Patina Coat. Amisiru no decepciona, otro número que es una obra de arte, llena de diseños exquisitos y una hermosa estética, un placer.
